Empowerment in Focus

At SOCHILI, we have been dealing with the effects of electricity on both communities and individuals for a long time. Access to electricity is a basic right that sustainably changes people's lives. It creates new opportunities, improves quality of life, and paves the way for sustainable development. It is all the more astonishing that to this day, over 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa alone are denied this right.

And as you know, at SOCHILI (besides our delicious sauces), everything revolves around Empowerment ❤️‍🔥. It's no coincidence that with every chili sauce sold, we provide one day of electricity in the Global South. But what many don't know: We not only give farmers access to electricity, but we also conduct Empowerment Workshops with them.

In these workshops, we get to know each other & jointly identify opportunities for how families can best use access to electricity. When I found myself in a room with three (!) families in rural Ndiob, Senegal, it was a very special moment for me. It was not only proof of our social impact but rather the prelude to many more workshops with our partner Africa GreenTec Foundation.

It only works if we work together

Our conversations with the farmers and families from Ndiob impressively showed us how important community-based approaches are. Only through cooperation and collaboration can we grow and make great things possible – and this mindset is even more crucial when living in a village where many people lack access to essential resources.

During conversations with the local people, one common theme quickly became apparent: all parents are primarily concerned with enabling a better future for their children. A motive that connects parents worldwide.

However, the seemingly "simple" impact of electricity on individual families deeply touched me.

Everyday problems without electricity

In the workshop, Fatou told us how the children in particular suffered from the darkness. With 4 children going to school and only one mobile phone with an integrated flashlight, it was previously impossible for the children to complete their homework 📚 on time.

But why? The children come home from school in the afternoon and cannot finish all their tasks before the sun sets. Once the sun has set, it is pitch black – without electricity or other light pollution, you can't see your hand in front of your face. In order to continue studying in the evening and do their homework, the four children had to share the flashlight 🔦.

Instead of learning at the same time, they had to learn one after the other. As a result, the children's sleep patterns were severely affected. 👎

Electricity = Living self-determinedly

🙌 This problem is now a thing of the past! Thanks to the power connection, all children can learn together & go to bed on time!

Isn't it crazy how simple social impact can be? 🤯 While this is just one of many anecdotes, it clearly shows that [...]

1. We, who grew up in the Global North, are incredibly privileged.
2. Challenges prevalent in rural Senegal can be very low-threshold.
3. Intercultural communication & cooperation are the key to success.
4. We are on the right track with SOCHILI!

The day in Ndiob gave us a fresh perspective on life & SOCHILI. And all of this makes us incredibly proud. 💪
