West African flavors with a fiery fruit note
Spicy Jollof Recipe
Bright red, aromatic and pleasantly spicy – our Jollof Rice with Habanero & Mango Sauce combines West African inspiration with fruity heat. Perfect as a spicy main course or special side dish!
What is Jollof?
Jollof rice is more than just a dish – it's a culinary symbol of West Africa, loved across borders. Originally from Senegal, several countries in the region now proudly claim this recipe as their own. Whether it's Senegal, Ghana, or Nigeria: each nation has its own version, leading to lively discussions about who makes the “best” Jollof rice. But one thing is certain: the dish unites the rich history of an entire region in a pot full of flavors.
Our interpretation brings traditional Jollof rice to perfection with a sophisticated spice and fruity note. The use of our Habanero & Mango Sauce creates a balanced interplay of sweet fruitiness and pleasant heat. The result is a comforting and flavorful rice dish that mentally transports you directly to West Africa.

Ingredients (for approx. 4 servings):
- 1 medium onion
- 2 medium tomatoes
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 chili pepper (habanero or milder)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tsp smoked paprika powder
- 1 tbsp curry powder
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp dried rosemary
- 2 bay leaves
- 380 g whole grain rice
- 475 ml vegetable broth
- Salt, pepper
- 2-3 tbsp SOCHILI Habanero & Mango Sauce (or to taste)
Preparation
Roughly chop the bell peppers, tomatoes, chili, and half of the onion and blend them with 1-2 tbsp of Habanero & Mango Sauce in a blender or food processor until smooth.
Finely chop the remaining half of the onion. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 3 minutes.
Add garlic and ginger and sauté briefly. Then add smoked paprika, curry powder, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaves. Stir everything well until the spices are fragrant.
Add the pureed vegetable paste to the pot, season with salt and pepper, and simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
Stir in the whole grain rice, then add the vegetable broth. Mix everything well, put on the lid, and simmer over low heat for approx. 40 minutes, until the rice is cooked and has absorbed the liquid.
Turn off the stove and let the pot rest for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to settle and the rice to become wonderfully fluffy.
Before serving, season to taste with additional Habanero & Mango Sauce to further intensify the fruity spiciness.
Tip: Give the Jollof Rice a fresh kick before serving by garnishing it with spring onions or fresh herbs.
